Square Enix Releases Foamstars Announcement Trailer, a 4v4 Party Shooter Game

Foamstars

When it comes to competitive shooters, the Splatoon franchise has made a name for itself with its unique brand of colorful fun. That same spirit is coming to PlayStation, with Square Enix revealing Foamstars at today’s PlayStation Showcase event. This 4v4 party shooter pits teams of colorful characters against one another in fast-paced foam-filled battles.

Foam isn’t just for attacking, though, as it can also be used to enliven the battlefield in multiple ways. For example, players can surf on sudsy surfaces to move around the arena at high speed, build up terrain to defend from enemy attacks, or create vantage points to take out rivals from above.

Of course, it’s not too hard to see that Foamstars is clearly inspired by Splatoon. After all, Nintendo’s knockabout game about covering the map in ink is quite a hit, with Splatoon 3 becoming a juggernaut in Japan in particular. The trailer for Foamstars shows a similar setup, with the colorful cast of characters duking it out on a neon-lit futuristic nightclub-like battlefield.

The gameplay in the trailer, which you can check out below, looks a lot like Splatoon mixed with Persona and Overwatch. Aside from the obvious squid-inspired paintballing, there are bubbly champagne bottles, Persona-like pet creatures, and more at play here.

While the announcement didn’t include a release date, Square Enix did reveal that Foamstars is coming to PS4 and PS5 at an undetermined launch window. More information about the game can be found on this blog post from the PlayStation website.
