These shy birds live in the Scarlet Forest, usually sitting atop tall trees or close to bodies of water. If you want to catch one, you need patience and a good strategy. This guide will assist you in finding and catching a Dapperwing easily.

How to Find a Dapperwing in Monster Hunter Wilds

Samin’s Research Report is a side quest in Monster Hunter Wilds where players are tasked with catching a Dapperwing within the Scarlet Forest.

To fulfill this quest, hunters need to:

  • Enter the Scarlet Forest
  • Find a Dapperwing in one of its identified habitats
  • Catch it with the Capture Net
  • Report back to Samin at Base Camp to finalize the quest

Dapperwings are located all over the Scarlet Forest, the second area of Monster Hunter Wilds. Although they are present in every season, they are most easily seen during the Season of Plenty because of their vibrant colors. They are also more easily seen during the day, so it is the best time to look for them.

Best Places to Find a Dapperwing

1. Western Ruins (Area 12)

  • This area is situated on the western edge of Area 12 and is inhabited by numerous birds, including Amstrigians.
  • Observe upper ledges closely to find a Dapperwing resting among other birds.

2. Great Lake Shore (Area 17)

  • Dapperwings are seen sitting on a ledge above the lake in the map’s northernmost part.
  • They are active during the day, so this is a good place to look.

3. Stone Path Between Areas 10 and 12

  • Two Dapperwings can usually be found sitting on a branch under a bridge at the north end of the bridge connecting Areas 10 and 12.
  • This is a good place to catch them.

How to Catch a Dapperwing in Monster Hunter Wilds

Steps to Catch a Dapperwing

  • Have the Capture Net in the hotbar or radial menu.
  • Hold LT (or Right-Click) to aim – a rectangular targeting aid will appear around your crosshair.

Check the color of the rectangle:

  • Orange = You’re in range, ready to capture!
  • White = Move closer before firing.
    • Fire the Capture Net by pressing RT (or F on PC) while aiming.
    • Successful capture of the Dapperwing (or any other animal in your crosshairs) will have it trapped in the net.

After catching, you may proceed to explore the Scarlet Forest further or go back to Samin at Base Camp to finish the side quest.
Capturing Dapperwings Tips

  • Go Slow – Abrupt actions will frighten them off.
  • Employ the Ghillie Mantle – This allows you to approach without scaring them off.
  • Try Multiple Locations – If you don’t get one immediately, go to another location.
