Last year Amazon Game Studios announced a Free-To-Play MMO based on the Lord of the Rings game. However, as can be seen from internal documents, we shouldn’t expect a release of the fantasy adventure before 2023.
In July of last year, Amazon Game Studios announced a new online role-playing game in the world of The Lord of the Rings. After the project had been quiet in the past few months, internal documents now provided fresh details on the planned schedule of the developers.
The most important information is that a release of the Lord of the Rings MMO is not expected before 2023. Furthermore, it can be seen from the documents that the fantasy adventure is still in an early stage of development.
Accordingly, the “draft of complete-game lore and narrative” is to be presented in January 2021, while the first playable prototype is planned for a presentation in June 2021.
Interested players will be able to play the Lord of the Rings adventure for the first time as part of an open beta. Ideally, this could start in September 2022. It should be so far in January 2023 at the latest.
The internal documents also show that the PC is the first to be considered with the Free-To-Play MMO. The consoles are supplied on the PC no later than twelve months after the start of the Open Beta.
So far there has only been talk of implementations for the Xbox One and PS4, since the Lord of the Rings role-playing game is planned for a release in 2023, as mentioned above, but we can assume that players will also play on their PS5 and Xbox Series X/S console.
